Social Justice and Peace Club

Welcome to the Kings Social Justice and Peace Club website. We wanted to create a space that students and members of the community could learn about what is happening both on and off campus. It is here where you have the opportunity to find out ways of getting involved both locally and globally. We encourage you to take a look around; we welcome any feedback . If you are a student interested in coming to Kings, and are futher interested in learning about the Social Justice and Peace Program, this site is a great way of getting connected and meeting others like you!

SCHOOLS FOR SCHOOLS BOOKDRIVE

The Invisible Children Network, in partnership with King's Social Justice & Peace Club, will once again be running the SCHOOLS FOR SCHOOLS BOODRIVE CAMPAIGN. Invisible Children have been raising awareness about the crisis situation in war-torn Northern Uganda for several years. Universities around North America are participating in this successful campaign by raising money to improve the quality of life for Ugandan students.

Through the SCHOOLS FOR SCHOOLS campaign, the Invisible Children Network has raised tens of thousands of dollars to build schools in Northern Uganda

The King's Social Justice and Peace Club, in alliance with the Invisible Children Network and Better World Books hopes to exceed last year’s total of 1,100 books by the January 28, 2010 deadline. The donated books will be sold by Better World Books to buy new books for the established schools in Northern Uganda. A drop-off box is located in the foyer of the Cardinal Carter Library and we encourage you to participate in this worthy initiative.

We are looking for newer, high quality books that have a re-sale value.

If you have questions, or want to know how you can get involved. Please visit us in the King's Cafeteria, let us know or email Melissa at johnstonemelissa@hotmail.com

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

Contemporary Human Demography

CONTEMPORARY HUMAN DEMOGRAPHY

If we could at this very moment shrink the earth's population to a village of 100 with all existing human ratios staying the same the village would look like this:

There would be 57 Asians, 21 Europeans, 14 Western hemisphere people (North and South America), and 8 Africans.

70 of the 100 would be non-white; 30 would be white

50 percent of the entire world's wealth would be in the hands of 6 people, and all would be US citizens

70 would be unable to read, 50 would suffer from malnutrition, 30 would live in substandard housing, and only 1 would have a university education.

When our world is considered from such an incredibly compressed perspective, the need for both tolerance and understanding becomes glaringly apparent.
